Hi, I’m a retired adult education teacher specialising in basic English and learning disabilities with not so much time on my hands.
After moving from the Midlands, I joined New Forest Mencap as a volunteer in 2018 with the intention of volunteering in the Tuesday evening Gateway club but was sidelined into running basic English and maths sessions up until covid lockdown.
I now chair the New Milton Gateway club, attending on Tuesdays and Saturdays as a volunteer alongside being a trustee.
The work at New Forest Mencap is sometimes challenging but always rewarding – we are here for the lovely people and their families/carers we support in both social and personal development activities.

I have lived in the New Forest with my wife and 3 children for the last 27 years, and have been a Trustee since 2021. I would like to use the skills and experience I have gained from both my personal and professional lives to help New Forest Mencap support more people with learning disabilities to live their best lives.

Sarah has a 30 year old son with autism and learning difficulties who is a regular user of Mencap’s services and is keen to support the work of Mencap in the New Forest to ensure that it provides high quality activities that meet members’ needs. She was a trustee of the New Forest charity SCARF (Supporting Special Children and their Relatives and Friends) for 10 years and has written award winning books for families of children with disabilities. She works full-time as a museum director.
